“(Scott) provides positive motivation for learning. While working with him on guitar, (my daughter) has learned how to keep time, play chords, and play the melody line while Scott accompanies her with rhythm.” – Sarah H., parent
“Scott is a great teacher – he took the time to find out what my goals were and planned fun and interesting lessons accordingly. The pace of the learning is fast enough that I don’t get bored. It’s a good challenge and Scott is always positive and encouraging.” – Sheila M., adult student (piano)
As a private music instructor, Scott brings thirty years of musical knowledge to his students. He is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, with experience in theater, rock bands, jazz and classical ensembles, world music and even film scoring. As a member of Orkestar Bez Ime, he has won a McKnight Fellowship for Musicianship and an Emerging Composers Award from American Composers Forum. However, his focus as a teacher is on the students, to allow them to learn their instrument and, in doing so, teach them how to have fun playing music. He teaches guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, and ukelele (all levels), as well as piano (beginner, intermediate, improvisation) and banjo (beginner). Scott teaches privately through Chanson Music Academy (St. Paul, MN).
While Scott understands the importance of teaching students to read music, he also offers the opportunity for students to learn by ear, while developing technique on their instrument. To more advanced students, he offers the opportunity to explore different styles of playing, and the opportunity to learn improvisation.
Scott is also available for workshops on Recording and Production, World Music, Guitar Improvisation and Alternate Tunings, Music Theory for Guitar, Blues Performance for Piano, and Film Scoring.
